On-chain security platform Blockaid counted 212 crypto security breaches in the first half of 2026, with losses passing $1 billion — a record high for such incidents. Ethereum- and Solana-related projects took substantial losses, and the single largest exploit drained $292 million from KelpDAO through a cross-chain vulnerability.
Cryptocurrency security breaches cost their victims more than $1 billion in the first half of 2026, a record high, on-chain security platform Blockaid reported. The firm counted 212 separate breaches over the period.
Two ecosystems carried much of that total. Blockaid put the damage to Ethereum-related projects at approximately $332 million and to Solana-related projects at approximately $326 million.
Then there is the single most significant exploit of the period, the KelpDAO incident. Attackers there took $292 million by exploiting a cross-chain vulnerability.
Taken together, the incidents underscore the challenges the crypto sector still faces in maintaining security. The reported $1 billion loss appears to suggest a trend of increased financial impact from such breaches in 2026.
Further security measures, and any responses from industry players such as Binance and Coinbase and regulatory bodies including the SEC, will likely draw scrutiny from here. New reports from security firms such as Chainalysis or CertiK could influence market perceptions.
Market pricing suggests a potential decrease in investor sentiment toward cryptocurrencies as a result of the heightened security vulnerabilities. That pricing is also consistent with scenarios where the total value of crypto hacks in 2026 exceeds $1.2 billion.
