Canada will impose counter-tariffs of up to 50% on more than 700 US-made products, hitting nearly $20 billion of US imports starting Sept. 8. The retaliation comes in response to new US import taxes and follows an escalation in trade tension between the two countries.
Canada will impose counter-tariffs on more than 700 US-made products in retaliation for new US import taxes, Bloomberg reported. The levies, reaching as high as 50%, take effect Sept. 8.
The tariffs will cover goods including US steel, aluminum, furniture, golf clubs, milk, and apparel. Prime Minister Mark Carney's government said the measures target industries hurt by US protectionism.
The targeted products represented about C$27.6 billion, or $19.9 billion, of US imports in 2024. The list also includes fish and aquatic goods, dairy, plywood, and paper products. Milk, cream, and whey will face a 50% levy, while cheese and curd will be taxed at 25%.
