Cardano's development arm has unveiled Pogun, a platform that mirrors Bitcoin onto the Cardano blockchain so holders can reach DeFi without surrendering custody. The rollout runs across 2026, ending with a trust-minimized BitVM implementation planned for the fourth quarter.
Input Output Group (IOG), Cardano's development company, wants to put to work the roughly $1.6 trillion worth of Bitcoin sitting idle in wallets. Its answer is Pogun, a platform that mirrors Bitcoin onto Cardano and gives holders access to lending, yield, and stablecoins while they keep custody of their own coins.
Charles Hoskinson, Cardano's founder, outlined the initiative on May 3, 2026. The pitch is direct: Bitcoin holders get DeFi access, Cardano gets the liquidity, and no one hands their keys to a centralized intermediary.
How mirroring works
Rather than wrapping Bitcoin in a tokenized form, Pogun clones the representation of Bitcoin assets onto Cardano's chain. The original Bitcoin stays put while the mirrored version interacts with DeFi protocols.
The BitVM-powered mirroring arriving later in the roadmap aims to minimize the trust assumptions built into most cross-chain bridges today. It builds on interoperability groundwork Cardano has already laid, including atomic swaps between the two chains.
Pogun's credit market design also differs from other Bitcoin DeFi projects. The platform operates without traditional oracles or collateral pools, and there are no margin calls; instead, transactions rely on bilateral agreements between counterparties.
The 2026 rollout
The non-margin credit market is slated for Cardano's mainnet by Q2 2026, followed by a yield-generating application in Q3 2026. The trust-minimized BitVM mirroring implementation is planned for Q4 2026.
Omer Husain leads the project, which sits within a package of nine IOG proposals requesting nearly $50 million in funding for 2026. That money also covers network scalability upgrades and performance improvements beyond Pogun itself. All transactions within Pogun require ADA fees, and revenues flow back into the Cardano treasury.
What it means for the field
Pogun enters a field that already includes Stacks, Babylon, and other projects chasing Bitcoin's idle capital. Cardano's eUTXO model shares architectural DNA with Bitcoin's own transaction model.
The nearly $50 million request signals IOG's bet on cross-chain interoperability as its growth strategy. Yet the Q4 2026 BitVM step is the linchpin, and trust-minimized bridges have proven extraordinarily difficult to ship securely.
