The CFTC registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization on September 28, making it the first USDC-native clearinghouse for derivatives in the US. A clearinghouse sits between two parties in a futures or options trade and guarantees each side gets paid. Coinbase's version replaces the usual bank-dollar rails with USDC, Circle's dollar-pegged stablecoin, for both settlement and collateral.

Around-the-clock settlement

Because USDC moves on blockchain rails, collateral transfers and margin calls don't need to wait for a bank to open on Monday morning. For institutional traders managing risk across time zones, that is a meaningful operational upgrade.

However, a clearinghouse is only as sound as its risk management framework, and running one on stablecoin rails raises its own questions about redemption reliability, blockchain congestion, and smart contract risk. The CFTC's registration suggests the agency judged those risks manageable within its supervisory framework.

How the approval came together

The groundwork traces back to the CFTC's December 2025 launch of a digital assets pilot program, which opened the door for Bitcoin, Ether, and USDC to serve as acceptable collateral in regulated derivatives markets. Coinbase then struck a partnership with Nodal Clear, targeting a 2026 rollout of USDC as futures collateral.

Before this registration, Coinbase Derivatives — a CFTC-recognized designated contract market — had relied on Nodal Clear as a third-party clearinghouse while seeking direct access to USDC in clearing operations. The Coinbase Clearing LLC registration completes that strategy, turning a pilot-era experiment into a fully sanctioned clearing operation.

What it means for Coinbase and USDC

Coinbase already runs one of the largest crypto exchanges in the US, alongside a custody business and an institutional services arm. A registered clearinghouse lets it offer clients a vertically integrated stack: trade execution, custody, and now clearing, all under one company.

The clearinghouse registration could drive significant new demand for USDC. Separately, each dollar of margin posted at Coinbase Clearing locks up stablecoin supply in a productive use rather than sitting idle on an exchange, and Circle, USDC's issuer, benefits too, since every USDC in circulation is backed by reserves that generate yield for the company.
