Ethereum developers have scheduled EIP-8141, or Frame Transactions, for the 2027 Hegotá upgrade, a change that would let apps or third parties cover a user's gas fee so they never need to hold ETH. The proposal also lets related actions bundle together so a failed trade reverses its token approval, and it opens a path for accounts to rotate keys or adopt new authentication methods.
Ethereum core developers have scheduled EIP-8141, known as Frame Transactions, for inclusion in the Hegotá upgrade planned for 2027. Core developers moved the proposal from Considered for Inclusion to Scheduled for Inclusion during the Aug. 27 All Core Developers Execution call, giving Frames a formal place in the roadmap even though the specification remains a draft. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, one of the proposal's 10 authors, drew attention to the work on Sunday after months of development.
Frame transactions separate gas payment from execution
EIP-8141 splits a transaction into as many as 64 programmable frames that each cover a distinct job, such as authorization, gas payment, or execution. The new transaction type is designated type 0x06. It carries an intrinsic cost of roughly 12,000 gas, with each additional frame adding about 475 gas. Because the account paying the gas fee no longer has to match the account sending assets, an app or wallet provider could cover a user's ETH fee while the user holds only stablecoins, and validators would still collect fees in ether. Existing tools such as ERC-4337 already support sponsored gas and programmable wallets, but they depend on separate infrastructure including bundlers and paymasters that Frames would fold into the base protocol.
Bundling could make failed trades reversible
Frames also let developers group related actions so they succeed or fail together. A token trade that currently needs a separate approval step can leave that permission active if the trade itself fails, but under EIP-8141, an approval attached to an unsuccessful trade could be reversed as part of the same transaction.
Key rotation and a longer roadmap
Programmable validation would also let an account replace its authentication method without moving funds to a new address, opening the door to key rotation and cryptography designed to withstand quantum computers for accounts currently locked to a single private key. The Hegotá hard fork is expected to follow the Glamsterdam upgrade, targeted for Q4 2026. Hegotá would place EIP-8141 alongside EIP-7805, a separate proposal focused on censorship resistance. EIP-8141 cannot be used on Ethereum mainnet today; its specification remains in draft status while developers continue implementation and testing work ahead of Hegotá's planned 2027 deployment.
