Gemini has secured a full Major Payment Institution license from Singapore's Monetary Authority, moving beyond the in-principle approval it held since October 2024. The license authorizes Gemini's Singapore entity to offer regulated digital payment token services in one of Asia's key crypto hubs.
Gemini has secured a full Major Payment Institution license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore, the exchange confirmed on September 8, 2026. The license moves Gemini Digital Payments Singapore Pte. Ltd. beyond the in-principle approval MAS granted the entity in October 2024.
What the license authorizes
Under Singapore's Payment Services Act, Major Payment Institutions face more comprehensive regulatory requirements because of the scale and potential risks tied to their operations. MAS says MPIs can provide regulated payment services regardless of transaction volume or the amount of e-money held, and requires them to meet safeguards such as protecting customer money.
For Gemini, the license's most relevant authorization is its Digital Payment Token service, the regulatory category Singapore uses for crypto assets. MAS currently lists 37 Major Payment Institutions providing DPT services, including Coinbase Singapore, Circle Internet Singapore, BitGo Singapore and Blockchain.com Singapore. The approval places Gemini into that established group of regulated digital-asset businesses.
Gemini already offers spot trading, digital-asset custody and over-the-counter services to customers in Singapore, and the company said both retail and institutional clients remain central to its Singapore strategy. Gemini President and Co-Founder Cameron Winklevoss said in the company's press release: "Securing the MPI license from MAS validates our commitment and investment into Singapore."
Part of a broader APAC push
The approval also lands as Singapore becomes a key center for crypto companies in the region, with BitGo recently opening its own Singapore office. Gemini's progress in the country has taken nearly two years, moving from the October 2024 in-principle approval covering cross-border money transfer and digital payment token services to the full license now in place.
This lands as Gemini expands beyond its core exchange business toward what it describes as a full-stack financial markets platform. In recent months the company has launched commission-free U.S. stock trading, 24/5 equities trading and tokenized stocks, and it is scaling a prediction-markets business through a partnership with Apex Fintech. Gemini has also secured U.S. regulatory approvals to operate its own prediction-market exchange and clearing infrastructure, reducing its reliance on third-party market infrastructure.
