Democrats have won both chambers of Congress after the November 3 midterms. Gold has historically posted higher average prices in the 12 months after comparable elections, though the size of the gains varied widely and the source says broader conditions matter more than the vote.

Democrats have secured control of both chambers of the US Congress after the November 3 midterm elections, ending Republican legislative dominance under President Donald Trump. The result raises the prospect of divided government and renewed uncertainty over fiscal policy.

Historical gold performance now draws attention. The five most recent comparable midterms, in 1994, 2006, 2010, 2018 and 2022, were all followed by higher average gold prices over the next 12 months.

Gold gained 28.3% after the 2006 flip

The strongest advance followed 2006, when Democrats captured the House and Senate under Republican President George W. Bush. Gold appreciated approximately 28.3% over the following 12 months. In 2010, when Republicans gained the House under President Barack Obama, gold advanced around 26.9%.

Later elections produced smaller moves. After Democrats reclaimed the House during Trump's first presidency in 2018, gold gained approximately 20.5% over the next year. In 2022, with Republicans taking the House under President Joe Biden, gold prices rose approximately 15%.

The 1994 election offers a more restrained comparison, showing a congressional shift does not necessarily produce a substantial rally. Republicans captured both chambers under President Bill Clinton, but gold remained broadly unchanged, gaining approximately 0.3%.

Longer record shows a mixed picture

According to Kitco Research, gold prices increased after eight of the 13 midterm elections between 1974 and 2022, with an average 12-month increase of approximately 14% and a median gain of 15%. When control of at least one chamber changed, the average increase was approximately 15%.

Congressional elections do not directly determine gold prices. Gold's later performance has frequently coincided with changes in monetary policy, inflation, economic growth and geopolitical conditions. In 2010, one day after Republicans won the House, the Federal Reserve announced a $600 billion Treasury purchase program, and gold subsequently appreciated substantially.

For the rest of 2026, legislative gridlock, fiscal negotiations and shifting expectations for government spending could influence Treasury yields and the US dollar, both of which remain important determinants of gold prices. The historical record offers limited guidance on the immediate market reaction, since previous gains generally unfolded over 12 months.
