HSBC has named its Hong Kong dollar stablecoin "HSBC RedCoin" and confirmed a second-half 2026 launch through its PayMe and HSBC HK Mobile App. The token will be pegged 1:1 to the Hong Kong dollar and start with peer-to-peer and merchant payments only, with corporate and institutional settlement to follow later.

HSBC RedCoin is now the official name for HSBC Hong Kong's forthcoming Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, and the bank has confirmed a second-half 2026 rollout through its PayMe and HSBC HK Mobile App. The token has not been issued yet, and day-one access stays inside those two apps rather than on exchanges.

Peg, backing and phased rollout

The stablecoin will be pegged 1:1 to the Hong Kong dollar and fully backed by segregated, high-quality liquid assets at all times. Initial use is limited to person-to-person and person-to-merchant payments, with corporate and institutional uses to follow, the bank said. HSBC also plans to add tokenized investment products inside the HSBC HK app as the product matures.

Licensing and a fraud warning

HSBC holds HKMA stablecoin issuer license FRS02, granted in April 2026 and one of only two issued so far; the other sits with the Anchorpoint joint venture. The bank issued an explicit fraud warning alongside the brand announcement, saying any token already circulating under the name "HSBC" or "RedCoin" is not its product.

Customer readiness and a parallel UK pilot

PayMe counts more than 3.3 million users, giving HSBC a ready payments funnel once the token launches. A survey of Hong Kong customers found 74% recognized at least one stablecoin use case, with 57% associating stablecoins with digital asset trading and tokenized investments and 53% citing peer-to-peer transfers. Sixty percent correctly understood stablecoins as fiat-backed digital assets, though 26% believed they were government-issued and 10% viewed them as interest-bearing.

Meanwhile, HSBC UK and six other major UK banks have begun testing tokenized commercial bank money in live customer transactions through UK Finance's Great British Tokenised Deposit initiative. HSBC also plans public education on the token through its banking apps, website and social media, with a focus on scams and transparent redemption.
