A $1.2 billion token unlock hits Hyperliquid's HYPE on August 29, days after the token touched a record high. Insiders receive the largest share of the release, and traders are watching whether it repeats the selling pressure seen after past unlocks.
HYPE, the token behind the Hyperliquid exchange, touched an all-time high of $83.27 on Sunday before slipping to around $77.50, according to CoinGecko data. The token's market cap sits near $19.5 billion. That run-up now meets a scheduled release: on August 29, Hyperliquid will unlock 14,175,778 HYPE tokens, worth about $1.2 billion at current prices.
Insiders get the largest slice
The unlock equals 1.4% of total supply and 2.7% of HYPE's market capitalization. Since the blockchain's November 2024 launch, Hyperliquid has freed a slice of its billion-token supply every month, and August 29 marks the fourth release in a row. Insiders take 46.6% of the tokens, against 46.3% for the community and 7% for the Hyper Foundation — the largest single share of this release.
Past unlocks show a mixed price impact
Token unlocks don't automatically tank a price, but they raise the number of tokens that can be sold, and new supply can pressure the market if recipients cash out. After the three prior monthly releases, HYPE fell 7% in July, rose 1% in June, and dropped 14.1% in May in the days that followed. Still, unlocks routed to insiders and early contributors draw the most attention from traders, since those holders paid little and have more reason to take profits than a community pool does.
Coinbase and Trump add to the momentum
Hyperliquid has also drawn attention beyond its token chart. Coinbase added 50x perpetual futures to its Base app through Hyperliquid's infrastructure this month. Separately, President Donald Trump directly referenced Hyperliquid during a media appearance mid-last week, ahead of a closed-door meeting with cryptocurrency executives. The exchange remains geofenced and unavailable to Americans, but Trump said the CFTC is "working to bring Hyperliquid into the United States in a fully compliant and legal fashion." He also called on Congress to pass a "fair version" of the Clarity Act at the same White House meeting.
With HYPE still near record levels, the August 29 release drops about $560 million of insider-facing supply onto a market that's already off its peak. The next unlock, of the same size, arrives September 29.
