Nigeria has become an Association country of the International Energy Agency, and its crude oil and condensate output climbed to 1.74 million barrels per day in June, a six-year high. The milestones come as Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote, prepares a potential $48.8 billion IPO for his refinery, even as Abuja pushes a parallel renewable energy buildout.

Nigeria formalizes its IEA partnership

The IEA Governing Board decided in June to welcome Nigeria as an Association country, joining South Africa, Kenya and Senegal in sub-Saharan Africa. IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol met Nigeria's Vice President Kashim Shettima and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Ekperikpe Ekpo in Abuja in September to discuss the country's energy and economic priorities.

Birol called it "a landmark moment – for Nigeria, for Africa and for the IEA", and the agency's global demand coverage now tops 80% with Nigeria's admission. The first IEA-Nigeria Joint Work Programme sets a roadmap covering energy security, investment, data and clean cooking.

Crude output hits a six-year high

Nigeria's crude oil production averaged 1.56 million barrels per day in June, the largest monthly average since April 2020. Total crude and condensate output rose for a fourth straight month to 1.74 million bpd.

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission attributed the gain to stable production operations across most producing assets and the absence of major pipeline outages. In August, the regulator estimated output ranged between a daily low of 1.64 million bpd and a high of 1.71 million bpd, as a crackdown on Niger Delta oil theft and sabotage continued to steady operations.

Dangote's IPO and a renewables push run in parallel

In September, Dangote announced plans to list his refinery in what would be Africa's biggest-ever IPO, with the offering valuing the plant at almost $48.8 billion if fully subscribed. The listing has been marketed to young Nigerians through banking platforms and fintech ventures.

Nigeria is simultaneously chasing its 2060 carbon-neutrality pledge under its Energy Transition Plan. The government's plans project $686.8 billion in fuel cost savings by 2060, contingent on building 277 GW of installed capacity and more than 104,000 mini-grids by 2030. An Ember report published in August projects Nigeria will install 1.7 GW of solar power in 2026, a 45% increase from 2025.
