Ripple's director of engineering says performance improvements are lined up for XRP Ledger in 2027. Ripple engineers have begun overhauling the XRPL core to handle smart contracts and commercial bank payments.
Ripple's director of engineering, Viijay Khanna, confirmed big plans for XRP Ledger in 2027. The remark came amid debates over the blockchain's speed, in which critics compared the network's roughly 1,500 transactions per second with the average daily load of Visa.
According to Khanna: "We have big plans for performance improvements lined up for 2027".
Ripple shifts focus away from TPS
Ripple's engineering department is aiming to exit the race behind the TPS metric. The logic is that the basic Layer-1 does not need to process millions of small transactions directly. Retail microtraffic would instead go to a second layer such as Dassie (Interledger), leaving the main layer to maintain large funds of banks and institutions.
The first step came this month with the release of xrpld 3.3.0, which cut nodes' RAM use by 13-23%. Technical audits show the issue lay in the system's allocator rather than in simple code flaws, because the software withheld server resources after the cache emptied. The fix allowed validators to decrease infrastructure costs, and the network received a fixCleanup package on November 4.
The 2027 roadmap targets banks
Ripple's president, Monica Long, has announced a plan to move a large share of the company's clients' payments directly onto XRP Ledger. Cross-border remittances will also be tied to new lending infrastructure.
The XRP Ledger Foundation has presented a 2027 roadmap. It includes 24 complex amendments worth $5.774 million for development and audit of working demo versions. It also lists plans for native smart contracts via WebAssembly (XLS-101), lending pools, options (XLS-62) and repo markets for interbank lending covered by tokenized assets. The roadmap further flags heavy CPU demand for pathfinding inside the native decentralized exchange.
Ecosystem builders are rewriting the base layer and using AI teams for testing and code optimization. The goal is to ready the ledger for the moment when RLUSD stablecoin transactions, tokenized stock trading and interbank lending become routine rather than pilot projects.
