Rising Treasury yields are hitting the stock market's earlier 2026 winners, with small-cap stocks sliding toward correction territory. The S&P 500 has reclaimed the lead over the Russell 2000 for the year as higher yields reshape which stocks hold up.
Surging Treasury yields have begun to hammer parts of the stock market that might easily be overlooked, especially with the spotlight once again shining on a small group of glamorous tech companies. Re-energized enthusiasm for tech helped the S&P 500 reclaim the lead over the Russell 2000 for 2026 this week, as small-cap stocks drop toward correction territory under the weight of higher yields.
The 10-year Treasury yield stands at 5.295%. The Russell 2000 fell 1.31%, underperforming the broader market by a wide margin.
Large-cap benchmarks held up better. The S&P 500 slipped 0.22% to 7,801.77, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.66% to 51,179.87. The Nasdaq Composite also eased 0.22%, closing at 27,538.69.
The AI boom is playing a role in the higher rates, though the backdrop has begun to create casualties beyond the tech names driving it.
