Saudi Aramco's Jizan oil facility was attacked again on Monday, just over a month after a previous strike disrupted production there, with the extent of the damage still being assessed. The renewed attack adds to a geopolitical risk premium already pushing traders to price in a return of $100 oil.

Saudi Aramco's oil facilities in Jizan were targeted in a new wave of strikes on Monday, according to the Financial Times. Aramco has not yet issued an official comment on the incident, and the extent of the damage is still being assessed.

Second strike on Jizan in a month

People familiar with the incident said the latest strike was similar in scale to the attack last month, which temporarily disrupted some production at the facility. Jizan sits in southwestern Saudi Arabia near the Yemeni border and has repeatedly been targeted by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement, with previous attacks also hitting Saudi oil infrastructure at Yanbu.

Aramco CEO Amin Nasser said last month that attacks on the company's facilities had caused temporary production interruptions but no material operational or financial impact. The Jizan refinery has a processing capacity of around 400,000 barrels per day, making a prolonged disruption potentially significant for regional energy markets. Oil prices spiked following news of the attack, adding to an already elevated geopolitical risk premium tied to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and other regional attacks on energy infrastructure.

$100 oil moves back into view

The renewed strike lands as traders brace for oil to test $100 again, well over six months from the US-Iran conflict that drove the previous run-up between March and May. Ship traffic along the Strait of Hormuz remains basically at a standstill, and there appears to be little appetite for de-escalation this time.

Antreas Themistokleous, market analyst at Exness, said the escalation around the Strait and the risk of further disruption to shipping could keep upward pressure on crude if tensions persist. According to Themistokleous: "the key risk is not simply another short-lived price spike, but a prolonged disruption".

Central banks face a fresh dilemma

A sustained run at $100 oil threatens to put inflation back on the agenda, feeding into pricier fuel and transport costs that could spill into the wider economy. Central banks had been able to look past the March-to-May spike as a temporary shock, but a longer disruption risks reversing progress made on bringing prices down.

That leaves policymakers weighing tighter interest rate policy against growth conditions that could weaken if households and businesses absorb higher energy costs for an extended period. Equity markets have largely shrugged off the US-Iran conflict so far, but a prolonged stay above $100 would test that resilience.
