More than 90 North Dakota banks and credit unions now have access to a dollar settlement route built on Solana, after banking technology provider Fiserv moved its digital asset platform into production. The first live use case is Roughrider Coin, an interbank payment token overseen by the Bank of North Dakota, and institutions reach it through Fiserv's existing Commercial Center banking system.
Fiserv brings Roughrider Coin live
Fiserv's Oct. 1 announcement named Roughrider Coin as the first production use case for its digital asset platform. More than 90 North Dakota banks and credit unions are participating, though Fiserv discloses that figure but not how much money moves through the token.
Institutions access Roughrider through Commercial Center, the same online banking system they already use for traditional interbank transfers. The Bank of North Dakota says initiation, approval, and settlement run through the same operational channels banks use for ACH and wires, so staff work within familiar systems. The production launch follows an October 2025 announcement from the Bank of North Dakota and Fiserv that had planned availability in 2026.
Permissioned token, public blockchain
The Bank of North Dakota's deployment documentation describes Roughrider as a permissioned asset on Solana's public blockchain. Participation stays voluntary and restricted to financial institutions. VersaBank USA National Association issues the token, Fiserv operates the platform, and the Bank of North Dakota provides governance oversight, with Fiserv assigning VersaBank responsibility for minting, burning, custody, and reserve management.
Fiserv calls Roughrider a stablecoin, while the Bank of North Dakota's current deployment page calls it a dollar-backed token deposit. According to the bank, each token carries one-to-one US dollar backing, and minting happens only after a confirmed transfer from an institution's operating account into a designated "for benefit of" account. Arrival at the receiving institution's wallet automatically triggers burning through a smart-contract instruction, a design meant to keep token balances low.
Solana trades 2.07% higher over the past 24 hours and currently ranks seventh by market cap.
What the rollout doesn't show yet
The Bank of North Dakota positions the system for treasury transfers and loan payoffs, citing near-instant, around-the-clock settlement at lower cost than wires, though its comparison table offers indicative costs rather than measured realized savings. For community banks, the immediate change is an added settlement option inside existing banking workflows. Whether participating institutions turn that option into routine business depends on an active-sender count and payment volume that Fiserv has not yet disclosed.
