Strategy Inc.'s stress test shows every one of its debt and preferred stock instruments keeps a coverage rating above 1.0x even if Bitcoin falls to $21,000. The company's internal modeling suggests coverage would only truly break near $7,000 to $8,000 per coin.

Strategy Inc.'s BTC Floor metric shows every one of its debt and preferred stock instruments would hold a coverage rating above 1.0x even if Bitcoin plummets to $21,000, a level roughly 80% below current prices. The company disclosed the stress test to show what happens to its obligations if Bitcoin craters.

The math behind the floor

Strategy's BTC Floor Annualized Return, the metric it uses to gauge the minimum performance its Bitcoin reserves need to deliver, currently sits at -11.34%. That figure marks the worst annualized return Bitcoin could produce before the company's obligations start looking shaky.

Put differently, Bitcoin would need to decline at roughly 11% per year, compounded over a weighted credit duration of about 5.79 years, before coverage ratios dip below the critical 1.0x threshold. The framework functions as an informal credit rating for the company's credit investors.

The company's internal modeling goes further than the $21,000 scenario. Financial projections suggest the over-collateralization framework could withstand Bitcoin prices as low as $7,000 to $8,000 per coin before the math truly breaks.

Liabilities against the Bitcoin cushion

On the liability side, Strategy carries approximately $6.7 billion in outstanding convertible notes following a $1.5 billion debt repurchase completed in May. Its notional preferred stock outstanding totals $15.5 billion after recent capital restructuring. Against those combined obligations, nearly 844,000 Bitcoin provides a substantial cushion.

The 1.0x rating at $21,000 means creditors remain whole even if Bitcoin loses the vast majority of its value from current levels. That holds across all instruments, not just senior debt, pointing to how deeply over-collateralized the balance sheet has become.

Duration as a buffer

This 5.79-year weighted credit duration shapes the entire analysis. A short-duration obligation needs Bitcoin to hold value right now, but a longer-duration one gives the asset time to recover from drawdowns. By extending duration through convertible notes and preferred stock rather than short-term borrowing, Strategy built in a temporal buffer that absorbs volatility.

Meanwhile, the May debt repurchase of $1.5 billion also reduced outstanding obligations, improving coverage ratios without requiring any additional Bitcoin purchases.
