Switzerland has banned the purchase and import of gold from Sudan and prohibited the sale of certain gold mining and extraction equipment to the country, aligning itself with European Union sanctions. The measures take effect on September 10.
Switzerland's Federal Council said on Wednesday that it banned the purchase and import of gold from Sudan and barred the sale of certain gold mining and extraction equipment to the country. The government aligned the move with equivalent EU sanctions, and the measures come into force on September 10.
The step follows action from Brussels. In July, the EU announced new sanctions against Sudan targeting the country's gold trade, which it said was being used to finance the military conflict in the country.
