THORChain rolled out version 3.20 on August 25, adding native swaps for Monero and Zcash against Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins. XMR jumped roughly 8.9% on the news, as the upgrade gives privacy-coin holders a self-custodial trading route at a time when centralized exchanges keep delisting those tokens.
THORChain's version 3.20 upgrade now lets traders swap XMR or ZEC directly for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins through the protocol's own liquidity pools, without wrapping tokens or routing through a centralized exchange. XMR jumped roughly 8.9% in response.
What version 3.20 changes
The cross-chain decentralized exchange protocol shipped the update on August 25, introducing native swap support for both privacy coins. Trades stay self-custodial throughout, meaning users never hand control of their assets to a third party during the swap. The release also adds Protocol-Owned Liquidity, which gives the protocol itself a stake in its own pools, and a Stable Reserve mechanism enabling fee-free stablecoin swaps.
Months in the making
The launch wasn't a surprise. THORChain's team demoed Monero swaps as far back as May 2026, and preliminary code had already been folded into earlier releases.
The project has described Monero integration as one of its most technically complex efforts to date. THORChain opted for a phased rollout, acknowledging that liquidity for the new XMR and ZEC pools will likely be thin at first. Shallow pools mean higher slippage on larger trades, so the early days will probably suit smaller swaps best while depth builds.
Why it matters beyond the price move
The 8.9% jump grabs attention, but the structural story runs deeper. Centralized exchanges have steadily delisted privacy coins under regulatory pressure in recent years — Binance dropped Monero in multiple jurisdictions, OKX followed, and Kraken trimmed its privacy-coin offerings in certain markets. Protocol-Owned Liquidity could accelerate the shift away from those venues: by deploying protocol-controlled capital into its own privacy coin pools, THORChain can bootstrap liquidity depth that outside providers might otherwise be slow to commit.
