Fundstrat co-founder Tom Lee says Ethereum's recent rally reflects improving industry fundamentals rather than a short-lived bounce. He points to four catalysts that could support the crypto market through year-end, and lays out a path under which Ethereum's price could reach $6,000.
Ethereum's Rally Is a "Course Correction"
Ethereum's price surged from around $1,900 to nearly $2,600 within days, while the total crypto market value increased by about $500 billion. The move triggered one of the largest waves of short liquidations in the crypto market, as traders who had bet on further declines were forced to close their positions.
Lee described the move as a "course correction", saying crypto prices had not fully reflected improvements in the industry. He said the current market differs from past downturns, when investment and blockchain use fell together.
Tokenization and AI Demand Could Expand Ethereum's Network
A key change, according to Lee, is growing interest in tokenization among banks and financial companies exploring ways to put traditional assets on blockchains, with Ethereum among the networks used for such projects. He also sees AI agents as a possible source of future demand, since AI systems taking on more tasks may need to make payments and manage money through Ethereum's smart contracts.
Lee compared Ethereum's position to the U.S. dollar, arguing that a financial network becomes more useful as more people and businesses use it. He believes Ethereum's large base of developers, applications and financial activity makes it more attractive to institutions building blockchain-based products.
Four Catalysts Could Support Ethereum Through Year-End
Lee identified four potential catalysts for Ethereum and the broader crypto market. Clearer U.S. crypto regulation under the CLARITY Act could ease the path for banks to develop blockchain-based products, though Lee said the industry could keep developing even if the legislation does not pass.
Capital still sitting on the sidelines after the previous downturn could return if gains continue, while investors in Asian markets could shift capital toward crypto if it keeps outperforming equities and AI-related investments. Strong Ethereum performance could also encourage institutions to raise their exposure.
Ethereum's Path to $6,000
Lee expects the ETH/BTC ratio could eventually move toward its previous high near 0.08. Under a hypothetical Bitcoin price of $150,000, an ETH/BTC ratio of 0.04 would put Ethereum at about $6,000.
