Ukrainian drones set a fire at a Russian refinery and naval drones struck a dozen vessels from Moscow's shadow fleet over the weekend, as Russia and Ukraine exchanged large-scale overnight attacks. Missiles and drones struck Kyiv, killing three people, and Ukraine now projects a drop in grain exports for the 2026-27 marketing year.
Russia and Ukraine exchanged large-scale overnight attacks, with Kyiv struck by missiles and drones as Ukrainian operations hit Russian oil facilities and vessels from Moscow's shadow fleet, Bloomberg reported on Saturday.
Refinery fires spread across southern Russia
Drone debris caused a fire at Russia's Ilsky refinery in the southern Krasnodar region, injuring five people, according to regional authorities. The facility, which can process around 6.6 million tonnes annually, has been targeted several times before. It sits inside Ukraine's wider campaign against Russian crude oil infrastructure. An industrial facility in Russia's Samara region was also attacked, and social media footage appeared to show a fire near the Syzran refinery, though Russian authorities did not identify the site.
Naval drones widen the maritime campaign
Ukraine also said naval drones had struck 12 vessels linked to Russia's shadow fleet in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov between August 1 and August 8; the ships were not identified. The widening maritime conflict has disrupted oil and grain routes through the region. Ukraine now expects agricultural exports to fall to 29.6 million tonnes in the 2026-27 marketing year, from an earlier estimate of 64.4 million tonnes. Wheat shipments are projected to decline 53% over the same period.
Kyiv absorbs a heavy overnight strike
Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces intercepted 397 Ukrainian drones overnight and another 83 on Saturday morning. Kyiv, meanwhile, was struck by ballistic missiles and drones during the same period, sparking fires across several districts; three people, including a child, were killed in the surrounding region, and three others were injured. Ukraine said it intercepted 135 of 151 Russian drones but failed to stop any of the six ballistic missiles launched overnight, as the country faces shortages of Patriot interceptors while allied deliveries lag demand. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged Ukraine's partners to take "concrete steps" to strengthen the country's air defences.
Russia said it hit a fuel depot in Kyiv and a facility producing components for Ukrainian missiles, though the claims could not be independently verified.
