The 60-day window set by the US-Iran Islamabad memorandum of understanding expired on August 17, 2026, with no extension scheduled. Iran says Washington broke the deal within 48 hours of signing it, and both sides have gone quiet on nuclear talks, frozen assets, and security in the Strait of Hormuz.

The negotiating window created by the Islamabad memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran expired on August 17, 2026, with neither side showing interest in extending it. An Iranian official said no talks about extending the deal took place at all.

That official also alleged that the US violated the interim agreement within 48 hours of signing it and later withdrew from it entirely. According to Washington: Washington has described mediation efforts involving Pakistan and Qatar as "static".

What the MoU set out to fix

The Islamabad MoU was signed on June 17, 2026 to create room for resolving three disputes between Washington and Tehran: Iran's nuclear program, the status of billions in frozen Iranian financial assets, and the security setup governing the Strait of Hormuz.

The strait matters to global oil markets because roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes through it, and neither side moved during the 60-day window. The June agreement followed a string of failed negotiations stretching back through 2025, a period marked by heightened military tensions between the two countries.

Where the talks broke down

Iran's account of events is blunt: according to Iranian officials, the US committed violations of the MoU within 48 hours of the signing ceremony, and Washington's subsequent withdrawal deepened the impasse. No formal extension talks have been scheduled, and the diplomatic calendar heading into late August 2026 carries no bilateral engagement.

Because the deal also covered sanctions relief, its collapse leaves Iran's financial isolation in place, with frozen assets staying frozen and trade restrictions remaining, since neither side reached terms on that piece of the agreement either.

What it means for oil markets

The immediate market concern centers on crude. The Strait of Hormuz is the world's most important oil transit chokepoint, and any resumption of hostilities or aggressive posturing in the waterway could tighten crude supply significantly. That geopolitical risk now sits unresolved, with no bilateral engagement currently scheduled.
