New blockchain data shows the top wallets on the XRP Ledger control over 43% of the total circulating supply, while most retail accounts hold under 0.1% combined. Centralized exchange wallets and Ripple Labs' own escrow holdings distort the individual wealth picture behind those numbers.
Whale wallets dwarf retail holdings
The Ripple native rich list shows a stark split across XRP's network. More than 4 million accounts hold between zero and 20 XRP, and another 2.55 million sit in the 20-to-500 XRP range, together making up the overwhelming majority of addresses on the ledger.
By contrast, just 322,083 accounts hold at least 10,000 XRP, or 4% of the more than 8 million total XRP accounts on-chain. The top 0.1% is narrower still: 8,053 accounts hold at least 275,026 XRP each. As of early 2026, the XRP Ledger reached 7.85 million activated addresses, up from roughly 4.5 million in 2023.
The top 50 wallets hold between 43% and 45% of the circulating supply, and institutions rather than individuals own much of that share. Ripple Labs remains the largest single entity, holding tens of billions of tokens across locked escrow accounts and corporate treasuries.
Exchange deposits and Ripple's escrow blur the picture
Centralized exchanges such as Binance, UPbit, and Bithumb aggregate customer funds into large wallets, so combined retail deposits get counted as individual whale holdings in on-chain rankings. Ripple's escrow adds another layer: the company releases one billion tokens per month under a smart-contract schedule set up in 2017, returning unused tokens to escrow each time.
Company founders such as Chris Larsen also hold significant XRP in personal wallets, further skewing top-tier threshold calculations. The top 1% threshold currently sits near 46,323 XRP, while the top 0.5% requires about 83,082 XRP — far beyond what most retail holders carry.
What concentration means for traders
Heavy supply concentration thins out public order books, which can produce sudden price swings in derivatives during volatile stretches. Traders track large wallet movements to anticipate market moves, though the ledger's Federated Consensus mechanism means wealth concentration does not affect network security, since validators hold no financial stake.
