Bitcoin's 13-week exponential moving average crossed above its 34-week EMA on October 12, 2026, a signal last seen three and a half years ago. Raymond James analyst David Cox also pointed to positive MACD histogram readings on the weekly chart.
Bitcoin's weekly chart printed a bullish 13/34-week EMA crossover for the first time in three and a half years. The 13-week line moved above the 34-week line on October 12, 2026. Chart watchers tend to treat such a move as a sign the medium-term trend may be turning in buyers' favor.
Analyst flags the signal
David Cox, CMT, CFA, a technical analyst at Raymond James, highlighted the crossover. When the faster line climbs above the slower one, recent prices are outpacing the longer-term average. The 13-week exponential moving average gives more weight to recent prices, so it reacts faster when the market shifts direction.
Bitcoin was trading at approximately $82,810 when the signal was reported, down about 1% intraday. The reported trading range ran between $82,810 and $84,000.
Momentum and daily trends line up
The crossover did not appear alone. Cox's weekly chart also showed positive readings in the MACD histogram, which pointed to building upward momentum. The MACD measures the gap between two moving averages.
This signal also fits within a broader uptrend. On shorter timeframes, bullish alignments across the 50-day, 100-day and 200-day moving averages have been observed since mid-2025.
History gives a mixed guide
Prior crossovers of this kind have often been followed by either substantial price advances or stretches of consolidation. The outcome depended heavily on broader market conditions at the time.
ETF flow data and inflation readings sit outside the chart, but they can easily override what the moving averages suggest.
