EIP-8061 would widen exit capacity for Ethereum validators while keeping the cap on new activations. New deposits would still wait in the queue before they earn rewards, and the proposal has no confirmed mainnet date.
EIP-8061 would expand exit capacity while retaining Ethereum's 256 ETH activation cap per epoch. But new validators would still wait for capped entry before earning rewards.
The entry queue stays the bottleneck
At 6.4 minutes per epoch, the activation ceiling amounts to 57,600 ETH a day when capacity is fully used. Validator Queue displayed 1,282,776 ETH waiting to enter staking and an estimated wait of 22 days, 6 hours when checked on Oct. 15.
The proposal would remove the fixed cap from exits and make exit capacity scale with active stake. It would also give validator consolidations their own capacity. Even so, exits would remain rate-limited, with a higher, stake-dependent allowance.
A new direct deposit earns no native rewards while it awaits activation. For 32 ETH inactive for 21.875 days and a 3% assumed gross annual reward rate, CryptoSlate's illustration puts forgone rewards at 0.058 ETH. That figure excludes compounding, costs, taxes and penalties.
Liquid pools spread the delay across holders
A pool such as Lido can give a new holder exposure to rewards from validators already working. This is how liquid staking shifts the cost of idle capital. When incoming ETH is still waiting to activate, more capital shares those existing earnings.
Using a 3% gross reward rate and a 10% rewards fee, the approximate holder rate is 2.70% if all capital is productive. It falls to 2.565% if 5% is non-earning and to 2.43% if 10% is non-earning. The source describes this as dilution of earnings per unit, not an immediate haircut to principal.
Exits would still follow separate clocks
Faster exit processing would address only the exit-queue stage of leaving staking. The consensus rules then impose a withdrawability delay of 256 epochs, about 27.3 hours.
As of Oct. 15, the EIP remained in Last Call, with a Nov. 1 deadline. Ethereum's Glamsterdam roadmap lists it as scheduled for inclusion, with mainnet expected in the fourth quarter and no confirmed date.
