Ethereum whales are buying the recent dip, adding 5,195 ETH worth approximately $12.9 million after the token slipped to $2,356. Institutional investors are moving the opposite way, with Bitwise and other Ethereum Spot ETFs posting their largest outflows since January.

Ethereum dropped to a low of $2,356 after the CLARITY Act failed in the US Senate. The slide reversed once the market responded positively to the Fed rate hike, and ETH climbed back above $2.4k, touching $2,444.

Ethereum whales continue to accumulate

With $2.4k holding as a strong support level, whales are buying into the slip. AMBCrypto earlier reported that whales purchased $100 million worth of ETH as the token signaled a rebound, and the accumulation has continued since.

A newly created wallet withdrew 2,695 ETH worth $6.94 million from Gemini and staked all of it. Separately, a whale that had been inactive for nine months withdrew 2,500 ETH worth $6.02 million from Binance. Together, the two whales purchased 5,195 ETH worth approximately $12.9 million.

Exchange activity reflected the buying too. Ethereum's netflow jumped to 64.3k ETH the previous day before plunging to around -32.5k ETH, implying that more tokens had left exchanges. Strong outflows from whales as the asset attempts a recovery suggest these investors expect the move higher to continue.

Institutions sell after the rate hike

Institutional investors, however, remain skeptical and continue to sell. The behavior has shown up clearly in the Ethereum Spot ETFs. Bitwise sold 14.3K ETH worth $34.21 million, its first outflow since late July and a clear sign of a shift in sentiment.

Ethereum Spot ETFs recorded outflows for two consecutive days after more than a month without any. Over the past days, the funds recorded $224 million in outflows, the highest since January, suggesting institutional investors are bearish and fearful of another slip.

What comes next for ETH

The challenge facing Ethereum now is institutional bearishness during weakness and indifference during stability. Whale buying alone remains inadequate against the pace of institutional outflows, so a shift in institutional sentiment is critical for a stronger move to the upside.

When whales started accumulating days ago, ETH rose to $2.6k. If whales resume buying and institutional selling eases, Ethereum could reclaim $2.5k and open another path higher.
