The Iranian rial has crashed to roughly 2.25 million per US dollar on the informal market in early September 2026, a fresh record low. War, sanctions, and a naval blockade have crushed Iran's economy since a military conflict began in February.

The rial's slide to 2.25 million per dollar marks a 12.5% drop since late August 2026, when it traded near 2.02 million to the dollar. The currency has now lost roughly 60% of its value since March and about half its value over the past year.

A war economy meets maximum pressure

The collapse traces to a cascade of compounding crises. A military conflict that began on February 28, 2026, with US-Israeli strikes on Iran triggered the current phase of economic deterioration.

Washington then reinstated a naval blockade in July, cutting Iranian oil exports to near-zero and stripping the government of its main source of hard currency. Trade with the UAE, previously a key commercial lifeline for Iranian businesses, has been suspended. Meanwhile, inflation has climbed past 40% year-over-year, and the IMF projects Iran's economy will contract by more than 5% in 2026.

The official rate fiction

Iran's central bank still quotes an official rate of about 1.5 million rials per dollar, but the free market rate, where transactions actually happen, sits at 2.25 million. That gap now exceeds 40% to 45%, undercutting the credibility of official policy. Iranian officials have promised interventions to stabilize the currency, but those pledges have so far produced nothing meaningful.

What the collapse means for global markets

The near-total halt of Iranian oil exports removes a meaningful source of global supply, which puts upward pressure on crude prices and benefits competing producers like Saudi Arabia and the US shale sector.

The isolation of Iran's financial system from SWIFT and correspondent banking networks has also historically pushed some Iranians toward alternative value transfer mechanisms, and the incentive to explore digital alternatives grows considerably as the currency loses value this fast.
