At the October 20, 2026 close, each Strategy share was backed by about $183 of bitcoin, and the share itself cost $142.72. To trade MSTR stock, you buy Strategy’s Class A shares on Nasdaq through a broker, or take a long or short position with a derivative such as a CFD or an option, between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. New York time. That gap between the coins and the share price is the first thing to understand, because it moves on its own and can work for or against you.
This guide covers the numbers behind MSTR, why the stock can trade below its bitcoin, the five Strategy tickers and which one does what, the stock’s record on report days, and how to size a position before the next report on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
How to trade MSTR stock: five steps
- Decide what you are betting on. MSTR is a holding company for bitcoin with debt and preferred stock on top. A long MSTR position is a long bitcoin position plus a bet on how much the market will pay for Strategy’s coins.
- Pick the ticker. MSTR is the common stock. STRF, STRC, STRK and STRD are preferred shares with fixed or variable dividends and much smaller price swings. Check that the symbol on your order is the one you mean.
- Pick the instrument. Shares suit a holding of months or years. A CFD or an option suits a view of days or weeks and lets you go short.
- Enter with a limit order. MSTR moved 4% on an average day over the past year, so a market order at the open can fill well away from the last price on your screen.
- Read Monday’s filing. Strategy usually reports its bitcoin purchases and share sales in an 8-K on Monday. It tells you whether the company is issuing stock, buying back stock or buying coins.

Two lines in that table explain most of the stock’s behaviour. Revenue from the software business is about half a billion dollars a year, while the bitcoin on the balance sheet is worth more than 140 times that, so the quarterly result is decided by the bitcoin price on the last day of the quarter. And the share count rose by a quarter in 12 months, because Strategy pays for its coins largely by selling new stock.
One charting note. The 10-for-1 split in August 2024 means older charts and articles quote prices ten times higher. The November 2024 record of $473.83 was $4,738 before the split.
Why MSTR can trade below its bitcoin
Multiply 848,517 coins by bitcoin’s October 20 close and you get about $70.4 billion. The market valued all of Strategy’s shares at $54.8 billion the same day, about 0.78 times the coins.
The ratio is what traders call mNAV (market value relative to net asset value), and the simple version above flatters the stock. Strategy also owes about $6.7 billion of convertible notes (June 30 figure, from the 10-Q) and has preferred stock that ranks ahead of common shareholders. Strategy’s own mNAV uses enterprise value, which adds those claims back, so its published ratio is higher than 0.78. Different sites use different definitions, which is why you will see figures for the same week that don’t match.
Why it matters for a trade: the ratio decides whether issuing new MSTR shares adds bitcoin per share or dilutes it. Above 1, selling stock to buy coins raises the bitcoin behind each share. Below 1, the same sale shrinks it. With the stock below its bitcoin on the simple measure, the company has lately spent more on buying back its STRC preferred shares ($193.1 million to October 18) than on bitcoin (267 coins in the week to October 18). The full history of the position, and how the premium has amplified or cancelled bitcoin’s quarterly moves, is in the Strategy and bitcoin guide.
MSTR or a preferred: five Strategy tickers
Search for Strategy on a broker and you may see five symbols. Only one is the common stock.
| Ticker | What it is | Dividend | How it trades |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSTR | Class A common stock | None | Follows bitcoin with extra swing; the stock this guide is about |
| STRF | Perpetual preferred (“Strife”) | 10% fixed | Senior to the other preferreds; moves with credit risk and interest rates |
| STRC | Perpetual preferred (“Stretch”) | Variable, reset monthly; 12% for November record dates | Rate is adjusted to keep the price near $100 |
| STRK | Perpetual preferred (“Strike”) | 8% fixed | Convertible into 0.1 MSTR share, so it partly follows the common stock |
| STRD | Perpetual preferred (“Stride”) | 10% fixed | Most junior of the preferreds |
Sources: Strategy’s Q2 2026 10-Q (tickers, rates, Nasdaq listing); 8-K of October 16, 2026 (STRC rate); The Block (STRK conversion, seniority). A fifth preferred, STRE, is euro-denominated and is not on the Nasdaq list.
For an MSTR trader the preferreds matter in a different way: they are a bill. Strategy paid $400.7 million in preferred dividends in Q2 2026 alone, and it covers that bill by selling new MSTR shares, selling preferreds and, this year, selling bitcoin ($218.4 million of sales by the Q2 release). Shareholders vote on October 28 on changes to how those dividends are paid, the day before the Q3 report.
What moves MSTR’s share price
Bitcoin, multiplied
In 2026, MSTR’s daily moves have tracked bitcoin with a correlation of about 0.81 and a beta near 1.6 to bitcoin, the highest beta of the stocks measured in the crypto stocks guide. The biggest days show the multiplier at work. On September 3, 2026, bitcoin rose 5.1% and MSTR rose 17.6%. On September 18, bitcoin rose 5.9% and MSTR rose 16.4%. Before you trade MSTR, look at the BTC/USD price chart.
The Monday 8-K
Strategy discloses its weekly bitcoin purchases, share sales and buybacks in an 8-K filed on Mondays. A week of heavy MSTR issuance adds shares and can weigh on the price. A week of buybacks, like the $1 billion MSTR repurchase capacity still open as of October 19, points the other way. As of that date, Strategy could still sell $18.8 billion of MSTR stock through its at-the-market program, so the supply of new shares is a standing feature of the stock.
Index and fund flows
Nasdaq-100 membership puts MSTR into every purchase and sale of funds that track the index, including QQQ. The Nasdaq 100 guide covers the index. S&P 500 membership is another matter: Strategy qualified for the first time in 2025 and was passed over that September, and no inclusion had been announced as of October 2026.
Short sellers
Short interest is 8.1% of float, and at 1.3 days of average volume to cover, shorts can exit quickly. That lowers the odds of a drawn-out short squeeze, but a sudden bitcoin rally can still force covering in a single session.
Weekends
Bitcoin trades 24/7 and MSTR does not, so a weekend move in bitcoin shows up as a gap at Monday’s open. The Coinbase stock guide measures how often those Monday gaps follow bitcoin’s weekend direction; the same logic applies to MSTR, with a larger multiplier.
How MSTR reacts to earnings
Strategy’s earnings are mostly a bitcoin report. Since it adopted fair-value accounting in 2025, the result swings with the coin price on the last day of the quarter: a $2.8 billion profit in Q3 2025, then losses of $12.4 billion, $12.54 billion and $8.22 billion in the three quarters after it. Strategy pre-announces the gain or loss days after the quarter ends (an estimated $20.91 billion gain for Q3 2026, filed October 5), so the headline number is rarely a surprise. What moves the stock is the funding plan, the dividend bill and where bitcoin trades that evening.
| Report date | Quarter | Next open vs report-day close | Next close | Three sessions later | Next-day high to low |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| October 30, 2025 | Q3 2025 | +6.1% | +5.9% | −3% | 5.2% |
| February 5, 2026 | Q4 2025 | +7.4% | +26.1% | +24.3% | 19.6% |
| May 5, 2026 | Q1 2026 | −1.2% | 0% | +0.4% | 5% |

February is the case to study. On the report day itself, before the numbers came out, bitcoin fell 14.1% and MSTR closed 17.1% lower. The next day bitcoin recovered 12.5% and MSTR rose 26.1%, on a report that showed a $12.4 billion loss. The report changed little; bitcoin changed everything. In the other three quarters, the next-day range stayed between 5% and 6.1%, which is not much wider than an ordinary MSTR session.
The MSTR earnings date page has the October 29 report time in other time zones, the full earnings calendar and what to watch in the Q3 numbers. For method, see how to read an earnings report and the earnings trading strategies. The Fed announces its rate decision on October 28 at 2:00 p.m. ET, so MSTR goes into its report with a policy decision, a shareholder vote and, the same evening, Coinbase’s results all in the same two days.
Ways to trade or invest in Strategy
| Method | You own the shares? | Can go short? | Main risk to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSTR shares | Yes | Only by borrowing shares | Drawdowns like the 83% fall from the November 2024 record close to the June 2026 low |
| Preferred shares | Yes (preferred, not common) | Rarely practical | Credit risk: dividends depend on Strategy’s ability to keep raising money |
| Nasdaq-100 ETF | Indirectly | No | MSTR is a small weight, so exposure is diluted |
| Options | No (unless exercised) | Yes (puts) | High premiums; implied volatility drops after events (IV crush) |
| CFDs | No | Yes | Margin losses, overnight financing, weekend and earnings gaps |
Shares give you the full package: bitcoin, the premium or discount, and the dilution. No dividend is paid on the common stock. If you already hold bitcoin, an MSTR position adds to the same bet rather than spreading it.
CFDs track the price without ownership and let you go long or short on margin. The CFD trading guide explains the mechanics and the leverage guide shows what margin does to a loss. With a stock that already swings like MSTR, the leverage is the part to respect. If you expect a fall, short selling vs buying puts compares the two main routes.
Sizing an MSTR position
Over the past year MSTR moved more than 5% on 70 of 251 sessions and more than 10% on nine. SPY did not move 5% on any of them. The largest single-day move in that stretch was the 26.1% jump on February 6, 2026.
Take an illustrative CFD position worth $10,000, opened with $2,000 of margin at the close on February 4, 2026, the day before the Q4 report.
- Long: the 17.1% fall on February 5 costs about $1,710, 85% of the margin, before the report is even out. Held one more day, the position ends about 4.5% up, but only if the account survived the first day without a margin call.
- Short: the same first day earns about $1,710. Held through the report, the 26.1% jump on February 6 takes back about $2,160, and the trade ends about $450 down.
- Long with a stop 8% below entry: MSTR opened 6.8% lower on February 5 and kept falling, so the stop fills that morning and the trader misses the next day’s rebound entirely.
Rules that follow:
- Size from the bad day. An average session moves 4%. Assume MSTR can move 15% to 20% against you in a day and decide what that costs before you open the trade. The risk-reward ratio guide covers the arithmetic.
- Count your bitcoin exposure. With a beta near 1.6 to bitcoin, $10,000 of MSTR behaves like roughly $16,000 of bitcoin on an ordinary day. Add it to any coins you hold.
- Treat Friday as an overnight decision. A stop-loss cannot fill on a Saturday. Holding into the weekend means holding through 48 hours of bitcoin trading. The overnight position entry covers financing on held CFDs.
- Watch the discount, not only the price. A widening discount to the bitcoin backing can push MSTR down on a day bitcoin is flat.
On the chart, the 50-day and 200-day moving averages sit close together at $136.55 and $135.45, just below the October 20 close. The June 26 intraday low of $81.81 is the floor of the past year. The guide to support and resistance explains how to read levels like these.
MSTR trading hours
MSTR trades on Nasdaq from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. Many brokers also offer pre-market trading from 4:00 a.m. and after-hours trading until 8:00 p.m. ET, with thinner volume and wider spreads. Strategy reports after the close, so the first reaction to the October 29 numbers happens after hours.
US clocks go back on November 1, 2026. Until then, the 9:30 a.m. ET open is 13:30 UTC; from November 2 it is 14:30 UTC. Clocks in Europe change on October 25, so for that one week London is four hours ahead of New York instead of five.
Trading Strategy stock with PrimeXBT
PrimeXBT offers Strategy among its share CFDs, so you can go long or short MSTR from the same account you use for crypto CFDs, and hold the stock and bitcoin side by side to see the multiplier for yourself. The live quote is on the MSTR price chart. A CFD is leveraged, which magnifies weekend and earnings gaps in both directions, so check current trading hours and conditions on the platform before you open a position. The earnings season guide lists the other reports landing the same week.
The 16 analysts who cover MSTR have an average 12-month target of $239.27, 68% above the October 20 close, according to StockAnalysis. The bitcoin behind each share is worth about $183. Which of those two numbers the stock moves toward after October 29 depends less on the report than on whether the market decides to pay full price for Strategy’s coins again.

Is MSTR the same as owning bitcoin?
No. MSTR is the common stock of Strategy Inc, which holds 848,517 bitcoin (as of October 18, 2026) but also has convertible debt and preferred stock ranking ahead of shareholders. In 2026 the stock moved about 1.6 times as much as bitcoin on a typical day, and it can trade above or below the value of the coins it holds.
What is the difference between MSTR, STRK, STRF, STRC and STRD?
MSTR is Strategy's Class A common stock and pays no dividend. STRF, STRC, STRK and STRD are perpetual preferred shares listed on Nasdaq with fixed or variable dividends: STRF and STRD pay 10%, STRK pays 8% and can convert into MSTR, and STRC has a monthly variable rate aimed at keeping its price near $100.
When does Strategy report earnings next?
Strategy reports Q3 2026 results on Thursday, October 29, 2026, after the US market close, with a live webinar at 5:00 p.m. ET. The company has already estimated a $20.91 billion gain on its bitcoin for the quarter.
Why did MSTR do a stock split?
Strategy carried out a 10-for-1 forward split on August 8, 2024, which cut the share price to a tenth. Older charts and articles may show prices ten times higher than today's split-adjusted figures.
What are MSTR's trading hours?
MSTR trades on Nasdaq from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, Monday to Friday. Many brokers also offer pre-market trading from 4:00 a.m. and after-hours trading until 8:00 p.m. ET, when spreads are wider and volume is thinner.
