Boeing’s two biggest moves of the past year came on days with no earnings report: a 10.1% gain on December 2, 2025, when its finance chief spoke at an investor conference, and a 6.9% fall on September 28, 2026, after a newspaper story about 737 MAX software. To trade Boeing stock (BA), you buy the shares on the New York Stock Exchange through a broker, or take a long or short position with a derivative such as a CFD or an option, between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. New York time. The report calendar matters, but with Boeing the headline you can’t schedule usually matters more.
This guide covers the numbers behind BA, what moves the price, how the stock has behaved on report days, and how to size a position before the next report on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
How to trade Boeing stock: five steps
- Know which Boeing you are trading. Commercial Airplanes is the largest of its three units and carries most of the risk. Defense and services are steadier, so a jet headline usually outweighs a contract win.
- Pick the instrument. Shares suit a holding of months or years and pay no dividend. A CFD or an option suits a view of days or weeks and lets you go short.
- Mark the known dates. The quarterly report, the monthly delivery figures and FAA certification decisions are the events you can see coming. Safety news is the one you can’t.
- Enter with a limit order. The stock opened 8.4% lower on January 8, 2024, the first session after a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9. A market order placed overnight would have filled at that open.
- Set the exit before the entry. Decide the price that proves you wrong and what it costs you. A stop-loss caps the loss on an ordinary day. On a gap day it doesn’t.

Two rows need a warning. The trailing P/E of 71 looks like a profitable company, but Boeing lost $5.1 billion at the operating line over the past year. The net profit comes from a $9.6 billion gain on selling Jeppesen, ForeFlight and other digital aviation units to Thoma Bravo for $10.55 billion, according to Boeing’s 2025 annual report. Strip that out and there are no earnings to divide by, which is why the forward P/E reads 217. The market prices Boeing on cash flow, not on earnings per share.
The other row is the five-year return. SPY gained 70% over the stretch; Boeing lost 12% and still trades 57% below its 2019 record.
What moves Boeing’s share price
Safety and regulators
This is the driver that sets Boeing apart from most large stocks. After the second 737 MAX crash, the shares fell from $422.54 on March 8, 2019 to $373.30 on March 14, an 11.7% drop in four sessions, as regulators grounded the jet worldwide. The Alaska Airlines door plug in January 2024 cost 8% in a session. The September 2026 software story cost 6.9% in a day, even though the FAA found within days that the glitch was not a safety concern, according to TIKR, citing Reuters.
The pattern: the price falls on the first report and recovers, if at all, only after the regulator speaks. The FAA also controls the upside. Certification of the 737 MAX 10 and the 777X, both expected in late 2026 or early 2027 according to Barron’s coverage cited by Tiger Brokers, would unlock deliveries that customers have waited years for.
Deliveries and production rate
Boeing gets most of the cash for a jet when it hands the plane over, so the delivery count is the closest thing to a monthly sales figure. Boeing delivered 161 aircraft in the third quarter of 2026, 124 of them 737s, according to its October 13 release. That compares with 160 a year earlier. The second quarter’s 171 deliveries were the most since 2018, according to TIKR. Boeing publishes the figures every month, so a light month can move the stock weeks before the quarterly report does.
Cash flow
Free cash flow is the number analysts ask about first on every call. Boeing guided 2026 free cash flow of $1 billion to $3 billion after a second quarter that produced $631 million, according to its July 28 results. The December 2, 2025 rally came when CFO Jay Malave told a UBS conference that cash flow would turn positive in 2026 and called a $10 billion annual target “very doable”, according to The Motley Fool. He gave no new figures. Confidence alone added 10.1%. The free cash flow entry explains how the number is built.
Airlines, oil and defense
Boeing’s customers are airlines, and airlines pay for fuel. US crude futures rose from $57.50 a barrel on October 20, 2025 to $98.49 a year later, based on Yahoo Finance data. Barron’s, in an October 14 piece syndicated by Tiger Brokers, named oil above $100, a sell-off in defense stocks and the 737 software issue among the reasons Boeing has lagged its own operating progress.
Defense is the steadier side and it rarely moves the stock much. On September 29, 2026 the Navy awarded Boeing the F/A-XX fighter, a development contract valued at more than $20 billion, according to The Aviationist. BA closed that session 1.8% higher, less than it had lost the day before.
How Boeing stock reacts to earnings
Boeing reports before the US open, so the full reaction plays out in regular trading the same day. Over the last eight reports, the stock closed up four times and down four times. The average move on report day was 3.8%, more than twice an ordinary session but a fraction of the safety-driven days above.
| Report date | Quarter | Opening move | Report-day close | Next-day close |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| July 28, 2026 | Q2 2026 | +1.2% | +4.8% | −3.4% |
| April 22, 2026 | Q1 2026 | +3.6% | +5.5% | +1.2% |
| January 27, 2026 | Q4 2025 | −2.4% | −1.6% | −1.2% |
| October 29, 2025 | Q3 2025 | −0.9% | −4.4% | −6.3% |
| July 29, 2025 | Q2 2025 | +1.3% | −4.4% | −0.1% |
| April 23, 2025 | Q1 2025 | +7.1% | +6.1% | +2.3% |
| January 28, 2025 | Q4 2024 | +3.5% | +1.5% | −2.3% |
| October 23, 2024 | Q3 2024 | +0.1% | −1.8% | −1.2% |
Calculated from Yahoo Finance daily prices; moves measured against the previous close.
Two things stand out. The opening move often points the wrong way: in July 2025 the stock opened 1.3% higher and closed 4.4% lower, after the 10:30 a.m. call had run. And bad reports keep bleeding. In October 2025, a $4.9 billion charge on the delayed 777X took 4.4% on the day and another 6.3% on the next, according to Boeing’s results and the price data.
For the October 27 report, the date, the consensus and the options-implied move are on the Boeing earnings date page. The guide to reading an earnings report explains why Boeing quotes a “core” loss alongside the GAAP figure, and how to trade earnings covers entering before or after the release.
Ways to trade or invest in Boeing
| Route | Suits | Can go short | Main cost or risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shares | Holding for months or years | Only by borrowing shares | Full price up front; no dividend |
| Options | Defined-risk bets on a date such as the report | Yes, with puts | Time decay; the premium can expire worthless |
| CFDs | Positions of days or weeks, long or short | Yes | Leverage, overnight financing, gaps |
| Dow Jones index | A broad bet with Boeing as one component | Yes, with index CFDs | Boeing is 2.2% of the index, so its moves get diluted |
Shares are a bet on the turnaround: deliveries up, cash flow positive, certifications through. With no dividend, the return is the price change and nothing else.
CFDs track the price without ownership and let you go long or short on margin. The CFD trading guide explains the mechanics and the leverage guide shows what margin does to a loss. For a bearish view, short selling vs buying puts compares the two main routes.
If you want Boeing as a small part of a wider bet, the Dow Jones trading guide covers the index. The Dow is price-weighted, so Boeing’s weight depends on its share price, not on the company’s size.
Sizing a Boeing position
Over the past year Boeing moved more than 3% on 35 of 251 sessions and more than 5% on seven. SPY did not move 3% on any of them. That makes BA calmer than most single stocks traders reach for, and that calm is exactly what catches positions out on the rare day it breaks.
Take an illustrative CFD position worth $10,000, held long into the open on January 8, 2024, with a stop 5% below the previous close.
- The stock opened 8.4% lower. A stop becomes a market order once the price passes it, so the stop fills near the open, not at 5%. The loss is about $840 instead of the planned $500.
- If $2,000 of margin backed the position, that single open took 42% of it.
- Halve the position to $5,000 and the same morning costs about $420. The plan failed by the same percentage, but the account absorbs it.
Rules that follow:
- Size from the gap, not the average day. An average session moves 1.6%. Safety news has produced openings 8% to 12% away from the last close. Decide what a move that size costs before you open the trade; the risk-reward ratio guide covers the arithmetic.
- Don’t count on the stop-loss overnight. The price gap entry explains why a stop can’t protect you from a price that never trades.
- Treat an FAA decision like a report. Certification dates for the MAX 10 and 777X will be flagged in advance. Holding through them is a separate decision from holding the trade.
- Check what else you own. Airlines and other aerospace names respond to the same fuel and safety headlines.
On the chart, the October 20 close of $190.47 sat below both the 50-day moving average of $203.66 and the 200-day at $219.18, with the November 2025 low of $176.77 the nearest level underneath. The guide to support and resistance explains how to read levels like these.
Boeing trading hours
BA trades on the NYSE from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. Many brokers also offer pre-market trading from 4:00 a.m. and after-hours trading until 8:00 p.m. ET, on thinner volume and wider spreads. Boeing’s results land before the open, so pre-market is where the first reaction shows.
The October 27 call at 10:30 a.m. ET is 14:30 UTC. US clocks go back on November 1, 2026, and from November 2 the 9:30 a.m. ET open is 14:30 UTC instead of 13:30.
Trading Boeing stock with PrimeXBT
PrimeXBT offers Boeing among its share CFDs, so you can go long or short BA from the same account you use for indices, commodities and crypto. The live quote is on the Boeing price chart. A CFD is leveraged, which magnifies gaps like the ones above in both directions, so check current trading hours and conditions on the platform before you open a position. The earnings season guide lists the other reports landing the same week.
The 29 analysts tracked by StockAnalysis rate Boeing a Buy on average, with a 12-month target of $267.22. Barclays started coverage in October at $300, according to TIKR. A year ago the average target was about $255 and the stock was near $217. Before you lean on a target, check whether the analyst set it before or after the latest FAA headline.
Trade Boeing
Trading involves risk.
Can you buy Boeing stock directly?
Yes. Boeing trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker BA, so any broker with US market access can buy the shares. You can also trade the price without owning shares through CFDs or options.
Does Boeing pay a dividend?
No. Boeing suspended its dividend on March 20, 2020 and had not restored it as of October 2026, so the return on the shares is the price change only.
When does Boeing report earnings?
Boeing reports quarterly results before the US market opens. The next report is due on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, with the conference call at 10:30 a.m. ET.
Why is Boeing stock down in 2026?
BA fell 12.3% between the end of 2025 and October 20, 2026. Coverage has pointed to a 737 MAX software report in late September, higher oil prices that squeeze airline customers, and a sell-off in defense stocks, while certification of the MAX 10 and 777X is still pending.
Is Boeing stock volatile?
Less than many single stocks on a normal day: it moved 1.6% on average over the past year, against 0.6% for SPY. The risk sits in gaps after safety news, such as the 8.4% lower opening on January 8, 2024.
