How to Trade SMCI Stock: Super Micro Earnings, Volatility and Risk

Super Micro Computer lost 24.4% in the week to October 16, 2026, then rose 15.5% in after-hours trading on October 20, when the company said its September quarter had brought in about $4 billion more revenue than it had guided. To trade SMCI stock, you buy Super Micro shares on Nasdaq through a broker, or take a long or short position with a derivative such as a CFD or an option, between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. New York time. Swings of that size are routine for this stock, so the size of your position matters more than the direction you pick.

This guide covers the numbers behind SMCI, what drives the price, the stock’s record on report days, and how to size a position before the next report on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

How to trade SMCI stock: five steps

  1. Know what the company sells. Super Micro builds servers and full data-center racks, most of them now around Nvidia and AMD AI chips. It sells hardware on thin margins, so revenue can jump while profit barely moves.
  2. Pick the instrument. Shares suit a holding of months or years. A CFD or an option suits a view of days or weeks and lets you go short.
  3. Check the calendar. Super Micro often publishes preliminary numbers a week or two before its report. Those updates have moved the stock as much as the reports themselves.
  4. Enter with a limit order. The October 20 session alone ranged from $30.92 to $33.17. A market order at the open can fill well away from the last price on your screen.
  5. Set the exit before the entry. Decide where you are wrong and how much that costs. With a stock that has fallen 33% in one session this year, a stop-loss is a plan, not a guarantee.

Two rows explain most of the stock. A forward P/E of 7.5 is cheap for a company tied to AI spending, and the market prices it that way for a reason: a 10.8% gross margin leaves little room for error, and the legal case described below erased a third of the stock’s value in a single day this year. The short interest is the other half. With nearly one share in six of the float sold short, good news can force buying on top of buying.

A charting note: the 10-for-1 split on October 1, 2024 means older charts and articles quote prices ten times higher. The March 2024 record of $118.81 was $1,188 before the split.

What moves Super Micro’s share price

AI server demand, booked in lumps

Super Micro’s revenue depends on a small number of very large orders for AI racks, and the timing of a few shipments can swing a quarter by billions. Revenue went from $5 billion in the September 2025 quarter to $12.7 billion in December, back to $10.2 billion in March 2026 and $11.1 billion in June (company releases filed with the SEC). For the September 2026 quarter, the company had guided to $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion. On October 20 it estimated $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion, against a consensus near $14.9 billion (Benzinga, ChartMill). Management has guided $65 billion to $72 billion for the full fiscal year to June 2027.

Margins

The second number in every update is gross margin, and it has moved as much as revenue. It was 6.3% in the December 2025 quarter and 17.5% in June 2026, helped by product mix. Guidance for September was 10.4% to 10.8%; the preliminary estimate is 12% to 12.5%. When revenue beats and margin falls, the stock has often gone down anyway.

Nvidia and the chip supply

Super Micro buys the GPUs it sells, so new Nvidia platforms and chip allocation decide what it can ship. Over the past year, SMCI’s daily moves have had a correlation of about 0.48 with Nvidia’s and a beta near 1.2 to Nvidia (calculated from Yahoo Finance closes). That is a loose link: on most big SMCI days, the news was Super Micro’s own. The Nvidia stock guide and the semiconductor stocks list cover the chip side.

Governance and legal risk

This is the risk that sets SMCI apart from other AI hardware names. On March 19, 2026, prosecutors in the Southern District of New York unsealed charges against co-founder Yih-Shyan “Wally” Liaw and two others over an alleged scheme to ship about $2.5 billion of servers with Nvidia chips to China. The company was not charged; Liaw left the board. SMCI opened 26.9% lower the next day and closed down 33.3% at $20.53, its worst session since 2018 (The Motley Fool, Yahoo Finance prices). A board review of export controls ended in August 2026, and Liaw, who has pleaded not guilty, faces trial in March 2027 (Fortune). Management keeps changing too: the company named Mark Long chief financial officer on October 14, 2026, replacing David Weigand (8-K, October 15).

Short sellers

Short interest of 15.7% of float is high for an S&P 500 company. At 2.4 days of average volume to cover, a surprise like the October 20 update can force shorts to buy back at once, which is one reason after-hours moves in SMCI run so large. The short squeeze guide explains the mechanics.

How SMCI reacts to earnings

Over the past five reports, SMCI’s next-day close has moved an average of 17.4% from the report-day close. Its average day over the past year was 4%.

Report date (after close) Quarter Next open vs report-day close Next close Three sessions later Next-day high to low
August 5, 2025 Q4 FY2025 −17.3% −18.3% −22.1% 5.8%
November 4, 2025 Q1 FY2026 −5.1% −11.3% −16.1% 9.1%
February 3, 2026 Q2 FY2026 +11.1% +13.8% +15.9% 10.9%
May 5, 2026 Q3 FY2026 +13% +24.5% +27.1% 12.9%
August 11, 2026 Q4 FY2026 +10.7% +19% +26.1% 13.3%

Two patterns stand out. First, the move tends to continue: in all five cases, the close three sessions later was further in the same direction than the first close. Second, the guidance moved the stock more than the quarter. In August 2025, revenue of $5.8 billion missed estimates by little, but Super Micro cut its fiscal-year outlook from about $40 billion to at least $33 billion, and the stock fell 18.3% (SiliconANGLE). In May 2026, revenue of $10.2 billion missed by about $2 billion, yet the stock rose 24.5% the next day, the biggest gain of the past year, because gross margin came in at 10.1% against about 6.75% expected.

The preliminary updates count as report days too. After the July 21, 2026 update, which put June-quarter margins far above guidance, SMCI closed 19.8% higher the next session. The October 20 update has now done the same job for the November 3 report: the revenue beat is public, so the call will be judged on the December-quarter guidance, the full-year target and whether the higher margin holds.

The SMCI earnings date page has the report time in other time zones, the earnings calendar and the consensus figures. For method, see how to read an earnings report and the earnings trading strategies. November 3 is also US midterm election day, so the report lands on an evening when the whole market may be moving.

Ways to trade or invest in Super Micro

Method You own the shares? Can go short? Main risk to watch
SMCI shares Yes Only by borrowing shares Drawdowns like the 83% fall from the March 2024 record close to the March 2026 low
S&P 500 or tech ETF Indirectly No SMCI is a tiny weight, so exposure is diluted
Options No (unless exercised) Yes (puts) High premiums; implied volatility drops after the report (IV crush)
CFDs No Yes Margin losses, overnight financing, earnings and news gaps

Shares carry the full story: the AI orders, the thin margin and the legal overhang. No dividend is paid, so the return is the price change and nothing else.

CFDs track the price without ownership and let you go long or short on margin. The CFD trading guide explains the mechanics and the leverage guide shows what margin does to a loss. If you expect a fall, short selling vs buying puts compares the two main routes.

Sizing an SMCI position

Over the past year SMCI moved more than 5% on 67 of 251 sessions and more than 10% on 14. SPY did not move 5% on any of them. The largest moves were a 24.5% gain on May 6, 2026 and the 33.3% fall on March 20, 2026.

Take an illustrative CFD position worth $10,000, opened with $2,000 of margin at the close on March 19, 2026.

  • Long, no stop: the 33.3% fall on March 20 costs about $3,330, more than the margin posted. The account has to cover the difference, or the position is closed at a loss larger than the deposit tied to it.
  • Long with a stop 8% below entry: the stock opened 26.9% lower, so the stop fills near the open, not at 8%. The loss is about $2,690, more than three times what the stop was meant to allow.
  • Long with a position of $3,000 instead: the same day costs about $1,000. Painful, but the account is still there for the next trade.

Rules that follow:

  • Size from the worst day, not the average one. An average session moves 4%. Assume SMCI can gap 25% to 35% against you overnight and decide what that costs before you open the trade. The risk-reward ratio guide covers the arithmetic.
  • Know which nights carry news. The report, the preliminary update and court dates in the export case are known in advance. Holding through them is a separate decision from holding the trade.
  • Don’t count on the stop-loss at a gap. A stop becomes a market order once the price passes it, and SMCI’s biggest moves have started at the open. The price gap entry explains why.
  • Count your AI exposure. If you already hold Nvidia or an AI-heavy index, SMCI adds to that bet rather than spreading it.

On the chart, the stock closed October 20 right on its 200-day moving average of $32.49, with the 50-day at $38.71 above it. The after-hours price of $37.51 sat just below the 50-day. The guide to support and resistance explains how to read levels like these.
